Neuralgia

Neuralgia is separated into different categories depending on the areas of the body it affects. These can include, Trigeminal, Postherpetic, Occipital, Peripheral, Intercostal and Diabetic. It will more often than not cause intense and distinct symptoms.

Trigeminal is the most common type of neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux. The trigeminal nerve supplies various areas of the face, including the cheeks and jaw and is sometimes described as the most excruciating pain known to humanity.

Right before the pain starts to develop,
you may feel numbness or tingling
in your face, head or neck

As the severity of the neuralgia increases,
the frequency of the attacks may increase too.

Strangely, neuralgia attacks
only happen when you're awake

How We Treat NEURALGIA

TN can be very difficult to diagnose, because there are no specific diagnostic tests and symptoms are very similar to other facial pain disorders. Therefore, it is important to seek medical care when feeling unusual, sharp pain around the eyes, lips, nose, jaw, forehead and scalp, especially if you have not had dental or other facial surgery recently.

Living with trigeminal neuralgia can be...

Trigeminal neuralgia turns everyday activities, such as toothbrushing or shaving, into agonising events. Even a gentle breeze blowing on the face can trigger pain. Known causes include multiple sclerosis or tumours pressing against the nerve. Women over the age of 50 years are most commonly affected.

You may feel as though your pain came out of nowhere. Some people with this condition start out thinking they have an abscessed tooth and go to a dentist.

The disorder can affect any of the three nerve branches, meaning you could feel pain from your forehead to your jaw. Usually, you’ll feel pain on only one side of your face. Some people feel it on both sides. When that happens, it’s called bilateral trigeminal neuralgia.

Living with trigeminal neuralgia can be very difficult and it can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, resulting in problems such as weight loss, isolation and depression. Contact us today to get your appointment booked to address your symptoms.
